 Jim Maki, a life long resident of Ely, served in the US Army from 1967-1970 and is a Vietnam Veteran. With over 40 years of hunting, fishing, and trapping experience, Jim has provided thousands of people with all of the necessary supplies and most valued guidance needed for navigating and landing that "big one" in the nearby lakes and landscapes.
Exclamations like, "It was the biggest fish I have ever caught!" are heard frequently around the shop and have been for the past 25 years! Whether you live in the area or are just passing through, you'll want to stop in and visit the only bait shop whose owner was born and raised in Ely!
Many of the pictures on this site and posted in the shop were taken of Jim's happy clientele on Burntside Lake, where Jim lives. The Great Outdoors Bait & Tackle has been a part of historical Sheridan Street of Ely, Minnesota since 1985. Built and currently owned by Jim Maki, The Great Outdoors expanded to include
